A Frame Architecture

Garden Buildings, Garden Offices, Sound Proof Garden Studios and Summerhouses Designs in the UK

Jeffrey Dutt founded ‘A’ Frame Architecture in January 2005 to continue the timber frame building research he first started in 1985. The company is fundamentally an eco-based practise, dedicated to designing and pre-fabricating garden buildings from sustainable and recycled materials. The garden buildings are constructed to a high standard, with sound and thermal insulation values that exceed the existing current building control requirements by 80%.

In February 2003, he invited leading manufacturers of timber frame building components to sponsor research to explore new concepts of timber-frame design and construction. Some of the early developments from this research group were incorporated into a design for an ‘a’ frame structure, which was erected at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 2003, as part of a show garden. This ‘a’ frame structure was one of the largest single structures ever erected at the Chelsea Flower Show, which incorporated an upper level play-room beneath the green-roof structure.

The research group has set aside most of the traditional thinking about modern prefabricated timber frame housing in terms of detailing and construction.

All of the designs for the new 'concept' housing and garden buildings have been developed around the use of structural insulated panels (SIPS) for the floors, walls and roof structure. In order to use such panels, a new structural concept had to be developed for the linking frame, which consists of timber ring beams at ground, first floor and eaves level, supported by the SIPS panels, with structure rafters supporting the roof panels; the overall effect providing a full diaphragmatic structure.

Virtually every component used for the series of new 'concept' houses and garden buildings has been designed from scratch based on research data from the UK, Europe and America, together with extensive testing of materials. A number of sites have been identified for the construction of prototype houses, which will be erected during 2007.

Garden Buildings

What makes our garden buildings stand out is that every design conforms to building control regulations, ensuring you get a high quality of building. ‘A’ Frame Architecture has a range of pre-designed options to choose from, from garden offices to studios or music rooms. ‘A’ Frame Architecture will also produce a bespoke design tailored to suit your specific needs. Please follow the link to find out more about our garden buildings.

Garden Offices

Garden offices are ideal for getting on with work in a quiet environment where you can get away from the usual hustle and bustle of a busy home or workplace. Extensive research and testing has gone into every component we use to provide you with the best quality garden offices as possible. Take a look at an example of one of our garden offices.

Sound Proof Garden Studios

The need for soundproofing in a music studio is of utmost importance if the building is to be used for performance and/or recording. Buildings of this kind require refined detailing, quality materials and most importantly the ability to manufacture to exact tolerances. We believe that this can only be achieved at the pre-fabrication stage. Our sound proof garden studios designs ensure that once the ground beams are in place these very close and exact tolerances for assembly on-site can be achieved. Take a look at an example of one of our sound proof garden studios.

Eco Friendly Buildings

‘A’ Frame Architecture produce eco friendly buildings to greatly reduce their effect on the environment. Our buildings allow for the addition and implementation of eco friendly features such as solar panels and triple-glazed windows. Follow the link to find out more about our eco friendly buildings.

Low Energy / Energy Efficient Buildings

Low energy / energy efficient buildings from ‘A’ Frame Architecture help to lower energy consumption and in turn your costs, through energy efficient methods such as high levels of insulation, high quality building materials and the option of triple glazed windows.
